It takes more than a day to explore the history of Bishop Auckland & County Durham.

We recommend staying for at least two nights to visit The Auckland Project’s attractions, including Auckland Palace and Gardens, the Faith Museum, the Spanish Gallery, and the Mining Art Gallery.

Please visit The Auckland Project website for up-to-date opening times and ticket information, why not purchase a Bishop’s Key pass which will give you an entire years access to all the attractions.

Park Head is also the perfect base for those who enjoy outdoor activities such as walking, cycling and golf.

We’ve included our recommendations below of the fantastic sites to see, to help you plan your next break with us.

Auckland Palace & Gardens

Auckland Palace is one of the best-preserved bishop’s palaces in Europe.

Highlights include the Georgian Gothic state rooms, the magnificent St Peter’s Chapel, and one of the finest collections of Zurbarán paintings in the world. Don’t miss the beautiful gardens, including the historic Walled Garden, where fresh produce is grown and used in dishes at Park Head Hotel.

Mining Art Gallery

With an intimate and awe-inspiring collection of mining art, the Mining Art Gallery gives a truly unique insight into the lives and souls of County Durham coal miners and their communities.

The Spanish Gallery

Immerse yourself in the Spanish Golden Age at the UK’s first gallery dedicated to the art, history and culture of Spain.

Inspired by the Zurbarán paintings in Auckland Palace, the Spanish Gallery contains the UK’s largest collection of 16th and 17th-century Spanish artworks outside London, including work by El Greco, Murillo and Velázquez.

Weardale Railway

Take a ride on the Weardale Railway to enjoy stunning views of Weardale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Managed by The Auckland Project and the Weardale Railway Trust, Weardale Railway operates regular heritage passenger services from Stanhope Station.

Did you know by being a guest of ours at Park Head, you will unlock a 10% discount off railway tickets! Ask at reception for more information.
